The Global Health Body Issues Alert Over Critical Shortage of Obesity Jabs

Under one in 10 individuals who could benefit from obesity jabs like Wegovy have access to them, caution the World Health Organization as it issues its inaugural guidance on the therapies.

With more than one billion people worldwide currently living with obesity, it is calling for more widespread and fairer availability to this class of drugs.

According to forecasts, in excess of 2,000,000,000 will be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our latest guidelines affirms that obesity is a long-term condition that can be managed with thorough and continuous treatment," remarked its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, insufficient output, and logistical bottlenecks are significant hurdles to universal availability to the treatments that can help people shift significant weight, says the organization.

Skinny Jab Shortage

Even under the present best projected case, the production of these medications could only cover approximately 100 million people – less than 10% of the global need, per the WHO.

The advice urges countries and companies to expand access, via approaches like patent sharing.

Exclusive production rights on the active ingredient – the primary ingredient of Novo Nordisk's Wegovy – is scheduled to end in multiple nations in 2026.

How Obesity Jabs Operate

GLP-1 drugs imitate a biological compound to reduce digestion speed, reduce hunger and boost satiety so people reduce food intake.

Individuals commonly start to lose weight in the initial weeks of beginning the once-weekly jabs.

Evidence suggests patients may see weight return after a year of discontinuing the treatment, as their usual hunger return.

To be overweight or obese increases your chance for developing medical conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and some cancers.

Excess weight concerns people in countries worldwide and was linked to millions of deaths worldwide in 2024, as per the WHO.
