At least thirteen passengers lose their lives and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.
A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's major government projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose term concluded the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its role in national infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked ongoing concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an urgent halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
